George Lindsey on Don Knotts: ''He's simply as good as they get.''
"He takes acting one step further than anybody else."

If you can go through life and be half as beloved as Don Knotts was, you will have had a life well lived.
Barely anyone who knew Knotts had a negative thing to say about him. The actor was not only a talented performer and comedian, but he was also intelligent and introspective. Throughout his career, Knotts also maintained a level of integrity that was admirable, always remaining kind and dependable to those who knew him.
One of Knotts' co-stars, George Lindsey, had no shortage of kind things to say about him in his memoir, Goober in a Nutshell. Knotts and Lindsey worked together on The Andy Griffith Show. Although Knotts left the series just a season after Lindsey's character was brought in regularly, Lindsey still had fond memories of his co-star.

The one scene with him trying to recite the preamble of the Constitution to Andy in "Opie's Ill-Gotten Gain" episode is the funniest thing I've ever seen on television. No director did that. That was the pure brilliance of Don Knotts. He takes acting one step further than anybody else. He's simply as good as they get."
More than a capable actor, Knotts was also a consummate professional, according to Lindsey.
"You usually did just one take with Don," wrote the actor. "That's all it took because he nailed every scene. And working with him, you always had the luxury of his talent. I regret that we were only in essentially one season together, but I'm forever thankful for that year."
