David Doyle only had one problem playing John Bosley on Charlie's Angels

"I didn’t want to be a spoiled, stubborn actor."

David Doyle loved playing John Bosley on Charlie’s Angels. However, there was one small issue that he seemed to take almost immediately with the character: his name.

What’s in a name, you might ask? Doyle had no issue making his misgivings known during an interview with the Copley News Service.

“When I first saw the name Bosley on my script, I said, ‘No, this has gotta go!’ I spoke up but not too loudly. I didn’t want to be a spoiled, stubborn actor. They told me, ‘Listen, David, this is just for the pilot film. We can always change the name if we go to series.’”

Doyle’s issue was a common one in Hollywood; He was frequently confused with another actor, Tom Bosley. The actor felt that playing a character who shared the name with the actor would only increase the confusion.

“I even agreed when they said that my character’s name would be John Bosley, which, if you say it fast, sounds like it’s Tom Bosley,” said Doyle.

“I said, ‘Why not change it to Roger or Richard so it doesn’t sound so close?’ And the producers nodded and said, ‘Swell idea,’ and went on their way. And I’m still John Bosley and people are still confused, and the producers are chortling.”

Doyle was right; the name did nothing to help frequent confusion, though he and the real Tom Bosley were able to laugh about it together.

“I told Tom that people congratulate me for playing the father on Happy Days,” said Doyle. “They want to know how The Fonz is and if he acts like that in real life?”
