David Doyle described the ''fear'' he had after Farrah Fawcett's departure from Charlie's Angels
Would the series succeed without its breakout star?
Though frequently acting as second fiddle to his more angelic co-stars, David Doyle seemed to treasure his role as John Bosley on the popular series Charlie’s Angels.
“That’s all right,” said Doyle during an interview with The Lexington Herald. “The money’s the same. I go where the action is. I was damned glad I got this series. It was one of the bigger steps in my career.”
The series gave Doyle a glimpse into the spotlight, watched by a mainstream audience. Of course, these successes were momentarily thrown into disarray after the first season, when series lead and breakout star Farrah Fawcett left the series as a regular character.
“When Farrah left, I must admit there were some fears on my part,” said the actor. “I checked with my accountant on how much money I had. I told Farrah at the time, ‘If the show is a success without you, I wish you all the luck in the world, but if the show goes down the tube, I will unveil animosity!”
Of course, Doyle’s remarks to Fawcett were made in jest. The series was able to succeed, even thrive, in spite of the actor’s departure from the series.
“Everything’s worked out fine,” said Doyle. “We’ve been fortunate in the choice of replacements. I don’t blame anybody for wanting to take a shot at something bigger and better. It isn’t always bigger and better. We live in the day of the hype. Every movie, every play is hailed like the Second Coming. Hope springs eternal in all of us. We believe what we want to.”
