Carol Burnett didn't believe being beautiful would have helped a comedy career

"When somebody is picture perfect, you stare but don't touch," said Burnett.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but there are certainly qualities that can make a person more enticing to the public. For example, having a good attitude and remaining kind can always make you appear more attractive to other people. With good qualities inside, these positive attributes can polish you, making your inner beauty shine on the outside.

Comedy can always make someone more attractive. The ability to make someone laugh is a compelling talent to have. Perhaps that is why we love a comedian like Carol Burnett so much. Burnett is already physically beautiful, but she lights up our television screens when she makes us laugh on programs like The Carol Burnett Show. Beauty is fickle and fading; comedy is forever.

This is why, perhaps, it is so strange that Burnett herself didn't seem to consider herself a "striking beauty," as she said during an interview with the New York Times. However, Burnett said that she preferred it that way, as it benefited her career. "When somebody is picture perfect, you stare but don't touch," said Burnett. "Because they might break. I'm not really slick either. I still have that tinge of being amateurish. I get embarrassed and can't take a bow that doesn't look like I'm kicking dirt."

Even so, Burnett maintained that she had to work hard for her spot on the stage, whereas most people who coast by on conventional attractiveness may have had an easier path into success.

"On most television variety shows, the pictures look as though they haven't ever rehearsed," said Burnett. "Why aren't the guests professional enough to learn their lines? We've always done our show cold turkey, live on tape, without stopping, even if someone blows his lines. Today, if someone has a hit record, the networks give him a variety show. They think that they can make a singer funny by writing funny sketches for him. But it doesn't work that way."
