Buddy Ebsen, Lee Meriwether, and Mark Shera were friends, both on and off the set of Barnaby Jones
One actor believed that their friendship was the key to the show's success.

Although some castmates are frequently at odds with one another, the cast of Barnaby Jones seemed to have avoided that issue by a mile.
The series ran for seven years, during which time the cast members adored each other. This appreciation wasn’t simply grounded in professional appreciation. Buddy Ebsen starred as the title character, surrounded by talented costars like Lee Meriwether and Mark Shera.
During an interview with the San Francisco Examiner, Meriwether had nothing but good things to say about her Barnaby Jones co-star, Buddy Ebsen. Meriwether called her co-star “a professional and a gentleman who doesn’t mask the concern he feels for other people.”
In another interview with The Morning News, Meriwether argued that a majority of the show’s fanbase was due to Ebsen’s talent as a performer.
“The audience is extraordinarily faithful, but it’s because of Buddy,” said the actor. “He does it. He has charisma.”
Meriwether also highlighted co-star Mark Shera, whom she called “the perfect foil that everyone needed.”
“He is very witty,” said the actor. “He keeps everyone in stitches all the time.”
This positive energy didn’t just keep things upbeat on set; it encircled both cast and crew, making for an unforgettable television series.
“I think what everyone feels is the great love we have for each other, and that's what comes out between us,” said Meriwether. “It’s like walking into a pool of honey. It’s true that we really love each other. After six years, the crew was offered more money, but they refused. They are willing to stay for less money.”
