Working on The Love Boat meant that there was no shortage of guest stars, many of whom were wildly famous. However, sometimes fame can lead to a big head, as Ted Lange learned.

Lange played bartender Isaac Washington for nine seasons on the hit series. Not only was the character popular with critics, but he was also a fan favorite amongst audiences everywhere.

But according to Lange, who recently spoke on the podcast Still Here Hollywood with Steve Kmetko, there was one unnamed actor who was not a fan.

On the podcast, Lange explained that during filming, it was common practice for the cast to introduce themselves to the guest stars and welcome them to the series. When Lange went to shake hands, this guest star pulled his hand away and walked off.

Years later, Lange still expressed surprise regarding the incident. “Well, who does that to anybody?” he asked. “Who does that to anybody?”

The reasoning quickly became clear. It seemed that the guest star had no idea how important Lange was to The Love Boat cast. “I had on my little red jacket; there were a couple of other guys with red jackets,” said Lange. “I guess he thought I was an extra. And even if he did, why would you do that to an extra?”

However, the star was due for a nasty shock when it was revealed that Lange would be his scene partner. “About a half hour later, he [the guest star] comes up with the director, and he says, ‘Ted, i want to introduce you to your scene partner...And the guy looks [shocked.]”

Of course, the guest star was more than willing to behave amiably when he realized Lange’s importance, though his true colors had already been shown. Lange didn’t worry himself with it, however, and was willing to do the same phenomenal work he was known for.
