They had different names. They never explained how they switched the prisoners out. It just happened.

Ivan Dixon decided to leave after the fifth season. The producers were ridiculously casual about character handling. We also never heard any explanation of Cynthia Lynn's Helga disappearing after the first season (she also decided to leave) and Sigrid Valdis' Hilda appearing. Or Arlene Martel's recurring role of underground agent Tiger but also appearing as different characters in a couple episodes. Or William Christopher's magically appearing as one of the Heroes in a couple episodes when one of the regulars had the week off. Or Marlyn Mason appearing in two episodes as the same character (Lily Frankel) but the second time she and Hogan had never met before. Or...

Or that William Christopher magically played a German soldier on leave for the first time in a year while refusing to get involved with Carter attempting to get “arrested” while carrying secret papers. And I never understood the second Lily Frankel episode. I mean it’s almost like Hogan recognizes her but they don’t know each other. It’s not like it would’ve changed much in the episode if they acknowledged her from the previous episode. Hogan could’ve asked the same questions about a boyfriend or if she got married and then they could’ve just continued making out as they did before. As many times as they reused the same actors in different characters on Hh you would think Hollywood had a actor shortage problem lol.
And to be honest, to me Helga and Hilda look so much like I can never tell the two of them apart.
