Have you seen these creature features yet?

Sony Pictures Releasing

In 2002, Danny Boyle and Alex Garland revolutionized the zombie movie with their macabre masterpiece 28 Days Later. While George Romero invented the modern zombie flick, Boyle and Garland slapped a fresh coat of paint on it and unleashed a new terror for the 21st century.

Before you watch the brand new 28 Years Later, here are five zombie movies we think don't get the attention they deserve.

1. One Cut of the Dead (2017)

 Asmik Ace

The less you know about One Cut of the Dead, the better. It hinges on a remarkable twist that changes not just its story, but its entire intent as a movie. This is a love letter both to zombies and zombie filmmaking. Even if subtitles aren't your thing, One Cut of the Dead is worth checking out. Trust us.

2. Blood Quantum (2019)

 Elevation Pictures

Blood Quantum grew from the Romero school of zombie movies with something to say. This one is politically pointed, but that doesn't take away from its power as a horror movie... It adds to it! The story sees a zombie outbreak around the Red Crow Indian Reservation in Quebec, Canada. But here's the interesting part: The First Nations people who inhabit the rez aren't affected. Their Indigenous DNA keeps them immune. You'll have to find out the rest yourself!

3. Night of the Living Dead (1990)

 Columbia Pictures

The original Night of the Living Dead from 1968 is rightly remembered as the most important film in zombie movie history. It's a seminal text in the genre, codifying many of the tropes we've come to recognize. But don't sleep on the remake! This one is directed by makeup maestro Tom Savini in his directorial debut. Who better to hone this new version than the man who made heads explode in Dawn of the Dead? This movie also has an incredible Tony Todd performance that's well worth the run time. Check it out!

4. Diary of the Dead (2007)

 Third Rail Releasing

Speaking of George Romero, the fifth movie in his Dead series has an interesting premise, as University of Pittsburgh film students accidentally catch the onset of the zombie outbreak on camera. The father of the modern zombie genre gives us a found footage fright. What could've been a strange experimental blip in a decades-long career was instead a well-executed and enjoyable entry in one of the great American film franchises.

5. City of the Living Dead (1980)

 Medusa Distribuzione

Aka The Gates of Hell, aka Paura nella città dei morti viventi, this Italian zombie feature is for the real sickos. It is goopy, in the best way possible. Lucio Fulci shows off his twisted skillset and hones one of the most memorably gross zombie movies in history. A seance goes wrong and leads to the first in a trilogy of movies known as Fulci's Gates of Hell series. They're all worth a look!
