Meet Joel Magee: Inside the Collection

This Disneyland collection is worth more than $10 million!!

Nov. 22, 2020

Disney lover Joel Magee has a collection in the eight figures. We're not talking action figures — we're talking dollar figures. That's right, this toy connoisseur has a jaw-dropping array of vintage Disneyland delights, from uniforms and cars from the theme park rides to models and artwork.

Joel built a 2,500 sq. ft. annex to his home to house his Disney… well, let's just call it a museum.  His Disney memorabilia is rare — and at times unique — but don't sleep on his vintage toys!

Let's take a tour of this collection estimated to be worth more than $10,000,000!

1. 'Haunted Mansion' Ride Characters

We start with perhaps the most expensive item in Joel's collection — and the most expensive we've ever come across on Collector's Call. The Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland remains one of the most beloved. Anyone who's taken a ride through the Mansion remembered the end when three ghosts appear through a "magic mirror." Of course, it was all done with smoke and mirrors — and these incredible mannequins.

2. 'Haunted Mansion' Characters

There are just three sets of the three from the ride (as seen complete at the top of this page). Disney has one. Joel has one. It's worth $1 million!

3. Disneyland PeopleMover Uniform

The PeopleMover ride operated in Disneyland until 1998. This polyester jumpsuit is the only known remaining employee uniform from the ride's decades of existence! That values it at around $20,000.

4. Disneyland Ride Uniforms

Joel has many vintage uniforms worn by "cast members" of Disneyland. (Disney calls is park employees "cast members.") Do you recognize any rides from their uniforms?

5. Disneyland Ride Uniforms

Joel has around 40 cast member uniforms from Disneyland. He is still searching for one from Adventure Thru Inner Space, however!

6. 'Adventure Thru Inner Space' Model

Speaking of which… here's a model from the bygone Inner Space ride at Disneyland. The ride closed in 1985 and was replaced by George Lucas' Star Tours.

7. 'It's a Small World' Model

This 1963 mock-up of the Disneyland It's a Small World ride was part of a larger Imagineer model made in the design process. It was handled by Walt Disney himself, which you can see in the photo. It's worth $150,000.

8. 1955 'Mr. Toad's Wild Ride' Ride Car

This is one of the 12 original cars from the Mr. Toad's Wild Ride atraction in Disneyland. This "Ratty" car was handmade — and it's just one of three or four known to exist. It's worth $500,000.

9. 1966 Justice League Playset

As we said, Joel's collection goes far beyond Disney. Take this 1966 Batman playset from Ideal, an action figure playset featuring the Flash, Wonder Woman and Superman. The box is the rarest part. Joel paid $5,000 for that alone — piecing together the rest of the set one by one. He's only missing a weather vane! It's worth, in total, about $20,000. Keep your toys!

10. 'Lost in Space' Roto Jet Gun

This is a mint sealed toy in package. Those are the golden words for collectors. Well, in this case "aluminum" — this cool sci-fi raygun came wrapped in foil! It's the first time our appraiser has ever seen one in mint, sealed condition. He priced it at about $20,000!

11. Marx Fred Flintstone on Dino

Yabba Dabba Doo! This battery-operated toy was part of Joel's collection — until he traded it with our appraiser for a 1958 Marx Disneyland playset still in its box!
