This Charlie's Angels star ''was not overly impressed'' with the show

Can you guess who?

Sony Pictures Television

Hey, there's no accounting for taste. If actors waited around for the perfect project to fall into their laps, they'd go without work for decades. There are so few shows and movies that can't be improved upon. So, while everybody wants to be attached to the best, the reality is, most of the time you're going to settle for stuff that has... potential.

John Forsythe was Charlie in Charlie's Angels. They mystery man delivering duties via speakerphone is never seen, but his voice is heard in every episode. So that voice was carefully considered and cast accordingly. Who had the vocal gravitas to order the Angels into action? Well, the main choice almost passed on the role.

Forsythe's friend, Aaron Spelling, produced Angels and approached the actor, asking Forsythe to read a script for the show's two-hour pilot. According to an interview with AP television writer Jay Sharbutt, Forsythe wasn't immediately enthralled by what he read.

"I read it and was not overly impressed," said Forsythe. "But I agreed to do it. They paid me a modest fee and I thought it would be shelved and pushed into oblivion."

However, the show did really well in the ratings. Better yet, the Charlie character allowed Forsythe some anonymity. Why pass up a solid paycheck when his face wasn't even associated with the show? They didn't even credit him, furthering the mystery of who might be the voice on the speaker. Forsythe, though, eventually figured that folks were readily identifying him.

"Well, it proved as big a secret as Pearl Harbor. But we've kept up whatever ruse there is, even though I'm not at all sure the whole world doesn't know Charlie is me."

Still, the show proved successful, which only incentivized Forsythe to stay on as Charlie.

"I'm constantly amazed at the show's ratings, all those people tuning in to listen to me."

Sure, John Forsythe... Sure.
