"We had this chemistry."

An actor is lucky to have a role in a television series, and even luckier if that role is a starring one. However, when an actor gets along with their co-stars, it is because the heavens have smiled upon them. The television industry has seen some mighty egos clash against one another, many on a single set. Some shows have spent their time filming fraught with tension, with actors willfully ignoring each other behind the scenes.

Luckily, The Wild Wild West was home to some incredibly humble actors who had no problem getting along well.

Robert Conrad, who starred as Agent James T. West, revealed that he held his co-star, Ross Martin, in very high regard.

"Very sensitive guy," Conrad said during an interview with SFGate. "Very theater oriented. I'd go to boxing matches on weekends; he and his wife would go to theater openings. I fraternized with stuntmen; he fraternized with fellow actors. He spoke several languages and studied Shakespeare. I was more of a street guy. Remember, I was a boxer before I became an actor."

Despite their differences, Conrad maintained that when the two were filming together, there was nothing but magic. "But Ross," said the actor, "We had this chemistry."

That chemistry may have been the very thing that saved the series, as Conrad revealed that he was rarely given space to rest while on the set of The Wild Wild West. "Ross Martin and I worked 70 hours a week without letup," said the actor. "We rarely got our scripts in advance. When I look back, it's like a bizarre dream we floated through."
