Jack Webb said that this was what set Dragnet apart from other television shows

Webb also said that the series had to ''prove'' itself.

As a television creator, Jack Webb couldn't have been prouder of the content he had a hand in creating. Webb was responsible for crime shows like Adam-12 and Emergency!

But perhaps nearest and dearest to Webb's heart was Dragnet, a series that enjoyed many iterations, a few of which Webb actually starred in.

Dragnet was Webb's pride and joy, not just because it was the series that made him famous, but because it worked hard to set itself apart from the fluff normally seen on television. While plenty of shows relied on shock value and window dressing, Webb made sure that the most important part of Dragnet was the stories that were being told.

"Dragnet is a different show," said Webb during an interview with the Santa Barbara News-Press. "It always has been. Instead of the whipped cream, the gloss, and the big-name guest stars of most of the detective shows, we go for facts and instances."

Many of these stories weren't simply drummed up in a writer's room; Webb said that they were developed from very real experiences in California.

"Our stories are real; we take actual case histories from the Los Angeles policemen involved in them," said Webb. "If they're good enough, we use them."

Webb praised the police force, with whom he worked in tandem to help nail the realistic element of the show. "They're really a great group of people," said the Dragnet creator. "We get to use real police cars, identification cards, and badges. It wasn't always like that, though. We had to prove ourselves first. You see, we represent real people. Instead of far-out situations, we like to deal with the pressing problems of today."
