Jack Lord had sworn off television before he starred in Hawaii Five-O
“I maintained that I would never do another television series,” said the actor.
All those years ago, Jack Lord had no idea that Hawaii Five-O was the series that would turn him into a star. Previously a film actor, Lord had dabbled in television, guest starring in popular shows like Bonanza and Have Gun, Will Travel.
However, by the time Lord was offered the opportunity to star in his own series as Detective Steve McGarrett, Lord had sworn off working in television.
“I maintained that I would never do another television series,” said Lord during an interview with The Herald. “And I kept proving my determination by turning down different series offers, good ones too.”
However, Hawaii Five-O was no ordinary series, which Lord understood straightaway. “As I got into the script that had been sent to me, my heart began to pound,” said the actor. “It had all the elements I had always liked.”
The series resonated with Lord on both a personal and professional level. He understood that the series had the makings of a hit, with a character that he could resonate with.
“The clean line of our show is McGarrett’s striving for a clearly defined goal,” said Lord. “He is a loner dedicated to getting crime out of the islands. What’s more, second place won’t do for this man. He is the representative of the detective breed - wholesome, clean-living, realistic, and honest. McGarrett is a very gentle guy who avoids trouble rather than seeks it, but he can be tough as steel when necessary.”
