Though Estelle Getty shared a face and a handful of qualities with Sophia Petrillo, she was quick to remind her fans that she was not a carbon copy of her character on The Golden Girls.

“I think people have me mixed up with my character,” said Getty during an interview with the North Hills News Record. “I would like to be as sure and magnanimous and feisty and strong and indomitable as she is.”

However, the two women certainly shared a zest for life and a desire to never give in to old age. One example of this came in 1993, when Getty released her workout video, Young at Heart: Body Conditioning with Estelle.

“I’ve always been good about moving, but never in any organized way,” said the actor. “For the first time, I got organized in what I was doing and why, which is the way to do it…My theory is that if you don’t use it, you lose it- no question about that. I was determined not to get any worse than I was.”

Getty’s video taught people how to exercise not just to remain active, but to improve their quality of life.

“Some will say, ‘I’ve worked all my life. Leave me alone. Let me rest,’” said the actor. “You should rest and can rest after exercise. Exercise is great fun if you do it with other people…I’ve been a very active person most of my life, working all my life. People who work all the time, for obvious reasons, generally are more energetic. You have to get up at a certain time, get showered, and get to work. Energy begets energy. The more you do, the more you’re able to do.”
