R.I.P. Dick Gautier, Hymie the Robot from 'Get Smart'

The actor also starred in 'Mr. Terrific' and provided voices for G.I. Joe and Transformers.

The Everett Collection

It's hard to believe Hymie the Robot appeared in just six episodes of Get Smart. The android was a fan favorite, and perhaps is the character that comes to mind after Max and Agent 99. When the gang returned for the 1989 TV movie Get Smart, Again!, Hymie played a significant part.

The role was played by Dick Gautier, who was no stranger to genre spoofs. During his Get Smart stint, Gautier was also a lead in Mr. Terrific, a 1967 superhero sitcom that followed in the footsteps of Batman. After Get Smart, the actor would again team with Smart co-creator Mel Brooks for a television farce, portraying Robin Hood on the short-lived When Things Were Rotten. Prior to his work on the small screen, Gautier earned a Tony nomination for his portrayal of teen idol Conrad Birdie in the original Broadway production of Bye Bye Birdie.

Last Friday, Gautier died of pneumonia in Los Angeles at the age of 85, according to Variety. Gautier is survived by former wife Tess, three children, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

After landing guest roles on shows like Kolchak: The Night Stalker, The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew MysteriesHappy Days and Wonder Woman, Gautier shifted gears into cartoon voice work. He was Serpentor on G.I. Joe and numerous robots on Transformers. Who better to play a robot?

Catch Get Smart on MeTV, Sunday nights at 2AM | 1C.
